Pedro Rodríguez retires: Barcelona great brings trophy-filled career to an end at 39

Barcelona, Spain — Spanish football great Pedro Rodríguez has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that saw him win virtually every major honour available at club and international level.

Pedro announced his decision on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, in an emotional video filmed at the Camp Nou, the stadium where he established himself as one of the outstanding forwards of Barcelona's golden era under Pep Guardiola.

After more than two decades in professional football, the former Barcelona, Chelsea, Roma and Lazio attacker has decided that the time has come to begin a new chapter in his life.

A career defined by trophies

Pedro leaves football as a World Cup winner, European champion, three-time Champions League winner and Premier League champion.

His most successful period came at Barcelona, where he emerged from the club's academy and became an important member of the side that dominated European and Spanish football.

During his time with the Catalan giants, Pedro won:

• Barcelona: Five LaLiga titles, three Champions League titles, three Copa del Rey trophies, four Spanish Super Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and two Club World Cups.

He later moved to Chelsea in 2015, where he added the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League to his collection.

At international level, Pedro was part of Spain's golden generation that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. He started the World Cup final against the Netherlands in Johannesburg as Spain lifted the trophy for the first time in their history.

The Barcelona years

Pedro joined Barcelona's youth system from Tenerife at the age of 17 before making his first-team debut during the 2007/08 season.

His breakthrough came under Guardiola, and he quickly became an important part of one of the most successful teams in football history.

In the 2009/10 season, Pedro made history by becoming the first player to score in all six official competitions contested by Barcelona in a single campaign.

Those competitions were LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, the Champions League, the Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

One of his defining moments came at Wembley in 2011, when he scored Barcelona's opening goal in the Champions League final against Manchester United as Guardiola's side won 3-1.

Success beyond Spain

After leaving Barcelona in 2015, Pedro continued his trophy-winning career in England with Chelsea.

He helped the London club win the 2016/17 Premier League title, before adding the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Pedro subsequently moved to Italy, spending a season with Roma before joining Lazio in 2021.

He spent the final five years of his professional career with Lazio and remained an influential figure despite being one of the most experienced players in the squad. Reuters reported that he finished his club career with 794 appearances and 197 goals, while he scored 17 goals in 65 appearances for Spain.

A special place in Spanish football history

Pedro's international career was just as significant.

He earned 65 caps for Spain, scoring 17 goals, and played a role in the country's historic triumphs at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

His performances at the 2010 World Cup were particularly memorable, with Pedro starting the final against the Netherlands as Spain secured their first World Cup title.

"The right time" to say goodbye

Announcing his retirement, Pedro explained that he felt the moment had arrived to move into a new phase of his life.

He expressed pride at having fulfilled his dream of becoming a professional footballer and gratitude to the people who supported him throughout his career.

His farewell message brought an emotional end to the playing career of a footballer who won 25 major trophies across club and international football.

An extraordinary legacy

Pedro may not always have received the same individual spotlight as some of his celebrated Barcelona teammates, but his contribution to one of football's greatest teams remains undeniable.

He scored important goals on the biggest stages, including Champions League finals, while his versatility allowed him to operate effectively across the frontline.

Barcelona officially described his career as one that left an indelible mark on some of the most glorious moments in the club's history. The club will also host a farewell event for Pedro at the Auditori 1899 on Friday, 9 October.

From the streets of Tenerife to the Camp Nou, Wembley and the biggest international stages, Pedro Rodríguez leaves the game with an extraordinary collection of memories.

World champion. European champion. Champions League winner. Premier League winner. A serial winner.

At 39, Pedrito has said goodbye to professional football — but his legacy will remain firmly embedded in the history of Barcelona, Chelsea and Spanish football.
