VILLENEUVE-D’ASCQ, France — Paris Saint-Germain produced another dramatic late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Lille in Ligue 1 on Friday night, with captain Marquinhos heading home deep into stoppage time.
The champions remain unbeaten but have now drawn both of their opening league fixtures after a similar 2-2 result at Rennes the previous weekend. The point leaves PSG with two points from two matches as they continue to search for their first win of the new campaign.
Lille took the lead in the 21st minute through Icelandic midfielder Hákon Haraldsson. The playmaker latched onto a clever reverse pass from the experienced Olivier Giroud and curled an unstoppable effort past goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.
Despite their attacking talent, PSG struggled to break down a well-organised Lille defence for much of the contest. The home side, managed by Davide Ancelotti, defended resolutely and limited the visitors to few clear chances.
Lille appeared to have sealed the victory in the 84th minute when Dilane Bakwa found the net to make it 2-0. The goal looked decisive as the clock ticked down at the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
However, PSG refused to accept defeat. In the first minute of stoppage time, Vitinha produced a moment of quality, curling a superb strike into the top corner from the edge of the area to give the champions hope.
Four minutes later, the Portuguese midfielder turned provider. Vitinha delivered a precise cross into the box and Marquinhos rose highest to head home the equaliser in the 95th minute, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.
The late drama mirrored PSG’s opening-day recovery against Rennes and underlined the resilience that has become a hallmark of the side under their current management. While the performance was far from perfect, the ability to rescue a point from a seemingly lost position will provide encouragement.
Lille will feel disappointed to have let a two-goal lead slip so late, having controlled large periods of the match and defended with discipline. For PSG, the result extends their unbeaten run but highlights the need for greater cutting edge and consistency as the season progresses.
The champions will look to convert draws into victories when they return to action, with tougher tests still to come in both domestic and European competition.
