MUNICH, Germany — Bayern Munich launched their 2026/27 Bundesliga title defence in emphatic fashion with a commanding 5-1 win over VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on Friday night.
Goals from Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, an own goal by Josha Vagnoman, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Luis Díaz underlined the champions’ continued potency as they extended their long unbeaten run in opening-day fixtures.
Bayern took the lead in the 21st minute when Joshua Kimmich delivered a corner and Upamecano rose highest to glance a header past the goalkeeper. The home side created numerous chances thereafter but were made to wait for a second goal.
Stuttgart equalised early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Vagnoman finished from close range after Manuel Neuer had saved a header, briefly silencing the Allianz Arena.
The response from Bayern was swift and decisive. Three minutes later, Olise restored the lead, calmly finishing after being released by Kimmich. Almost immediately, misfortune struck Stuttgart again as Vagnoman turned Alphonso Davies’ low cross into his own net while attempting to clear, making it 3-1.
Bayern continued to dominate. Substitute Ismael Saibari played a key role in the closing stages, first setting up Pavlovic for a simple tap-in in the 82nd minute and then providing the assist for Díaz to score the fifth in stoppage time.
The performance highlighted Bayern’s attacking depth and intensity. Harry Kane, who was honoured as Germany’s Footballer of the Year before kick-off, linked play effectively, while the midfield controlled proceedings throughout.
Stuttgart, who finished fourth last season, showed brief resistance but ultimately struggled to contain the champions once the second half opened up. The visitors will look to regroup quickly as the campaign progresses.
For Bayern, the result provided the perfect start to another title challenge. Having scored a record number of goals en route to last season’s championship, the Bavarians demonstrated they remain the team to beat in the Bundesliga.
The champions will now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures, carrying significant momentum from a dominant opening-night display.
