Australia name two potential debutants in Nations Championship squad

MELBOURNE — Australia have included uncapped scrum-half Teddy Wilson and prop Tom Lambert in a 33-man squad for their November Nations Championship Tests against England, Scotland and Wales, as head coach Les Kiss looks to strengthen the Wallabies ahead of a demanding run of international fixtures.

The selections offer both players an opportunity to make their senior international debuts, with Wilson earning recognition for his performances with the New South Wales Waratahs and Lambert rewarded for an impressive season at loosehead prop.

Harry Wilson will captain the squad, which also features the return of fly-half Carter Gordon and several overseas-based forwards.

Teddy Wilson and Tom Lambert earn opportunities

Teddy Wilson is among the most notable inclusions. The 23-year-old scrum-half is the son of former Australia international David Wilson, who won 79 caps and was part of the Wallabies squad that lifted the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

The younger Wilson has progressed through Australia's age-grade pathway, captaining the under-20 side in 2023, and now has the chance to establish himself at senior level.

He joins Ryan Lonergan and Tate McDermott as the three scrum-halves selected for the November campaign.

Lambert, meanwhile, has earned his place following a strong season with the Waratahs. His inclusion provides another option in the front row as Australia prepare to face three leading European opponents.

Neither player has yet earned a Wallabies Test cap, making their potential debuts a key storyline ahead of the series.

Carter Gordon returns as experienced forwards are recalled

Gordon has been recalled despite continuing his recovery from a broken leg sustained against Argentina. His selection gives Australia another option at fly-half, although his availability for the Tests will depend on his fitness.

The squad also welcomes back prop Taniela Tupou, loose forward Tom Hooper and lock Miles Amatosero.

Tupou and Hooper have been playing overseas, while their return adds experience and physical presence to the forward pack.

However, Australia will be without several players because of injuries. Lock Will Skelton, loose forward Charlie Cale and scrum-half Jake Gordon are among those unavailable.

Several players dropped after New Zealand defeats

Kiss has made changes following Australia's back-to-back defeats against New Zealand.

Nick Champion de Crespigny, Toby Macpherson, Zane Nonggor, Aidan Ross, Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, Jordan Petaia and Kalani Thomas have been omitted from the squad.

The changes reflect the coaching staff's attempt to balance established international experience with emerging talent as Australia seek a stronger finish to the international season.

The Wallabies lost two of their three home Nations Championship matches in July, suffering defeats against France and Ireland. Their upcoming European fixtures will provide another test of the squad's depth and consistency.

Wallabies face England, Scotland and Wales

Australia's November campaign begins against England at Twickenham on 8 November, before subsequent Tests against Scotland and Wales.

The matches form part of the inaugural Nations Championship, which brings together six northern hemisphere and six southern hemisphere nations across the July and November international windows.

The competition will culminate in a finals weekend at Twickenham from 27 to 29 November.

For Australia, the immediate priority is to produce improved performances after the recent setbacks against New Zealand. Wilson and Lambert could provide fresh energy if they make their debuts, while the returning players will be expected to strengthen the team's options.

With Harry Wilson leading the side, the Wallabies will hope their blend of experience and emerging talent can deliver a more consistent showing against northern hemisphere opposition.
