Cristiano Ronaldo announces retirement from Portugal national team after 23 years

Lisbon — Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 41, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year career with the national team.

The Al-Nassr forward made the announcement on Thursday, 5 November 2026, through a video message posted on his social media accounts, confirming that he would hand back Portugal's iconic number seven shirt after the November international break.

Ronaldo, who made his senior international debut in August 2003, leaves the national team as its record appearance holder and all-time leading scorer, with 234 caps and 146 goals.

In his farewell message, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner described the decision as difficult, explaining that it was not made with his mind alone but also with his heart.

"Today I finish my walk on the pitch with the national team. I leave with my head held high, with pride in the path I took, and with the awareness that I gave everything I had for Portugal," he said.

He also thanked Portuguese supporters for their backing throughout his international career.

"Thank you for these 23 years. Thank you for having believed in me. Portugal will always be in me. Forever," Ronaldo added.

A legendary international career

Ronaldo's international journey began in 2003, and he went on to become one of the most influential players in Portugal's football history.

His greatest achievement with the national team came at Euro 2016, when Portugal defeated France 1-0 after extra time in the final to win their first European Championship.

He also helped Portugal secure the UEFA Nations League title in 2019 and 2025.

The forward holds the world record for the most international appearances and goals in men's football, having scored 146 times in 234 matches.

He also represented Portugal at six World Cups and six European Championships, establishing a remarkable record of longevity at the highest level.

Retirement follows disagreement with Portugal coach

Ronaldo's announcement comes after a difficult period involving Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.

The forward reportedly became frustrated after being left out of the action during Portugal's 2-1 defeat against Norway in September. He subsequently left the national team camp, leading to disciplinary action from the Portuguese Football Federation.

He received a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine, although he later apologised for leaving the camp.

Despite the disagreement, Ronaldo's retirement announcement brings his international career to a definitive conclusion.

Tributes pour in for Portugal's greatest football icon

The Portuguese Football Federation paid tribute to Ronaldo, praising his dedication, leadership and extraordinary contribution to the national team.

His current club, Al-Nassr, also celebrated his achievements, describing him as an icon whose legacy extends beyond Portugal.

Former teammate Bruno Fernandes thanked Ronaldo for his inspiration, while former Portugal defender Pepe also paid an emotional tribute.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino praised the forward's remarkable career, highlighting his talent, determination and contribution to world football.

Ronaldo now turns his attention to the remaining years of his club career with Al-Nassr, having brought one of the most celebrated international careers in football history to an end.
