The GFA confirmed the decision on Thursday, 1 October 2026, following discussions between both parties.
“Following discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect, the Ghana Football Association and I have mutually agreed to terminate the Service Agreement governing my role as Head Coach of the Ghana National Team, the Black Stars,” Queiroz said in a statement released by the federation.
The development comes less than 48 hours after Ghana suffered a 4–2 defeat to The Gambia in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana had taken a 2–0 lead through Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan before The Gambia fought back with four goals to complete a dramatic comeback.
Queiroz had accepted responsibility
Following the defeat, Queiroz accepted full responsibility for the result and apologised to Ghanaian supporters.
The Portuguese coach also addressed calls for his resignation, saying he would be willing to step down if the GFA believed his departure would solve the problems facing Ghanaian football.
“If you believe that with the coach resigning, you can change the situation of football in Ghana, I'll be the first one to resign,” Queiroz said after the defeat.
He also pointed to an extensive injury crisis affecting the Black Stars, saying 24 players from the national team's wider group were unavailable.
Short second spell ends
Queiroz was reappointed as Ghana coach in September 2026 after initially taking charge of the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The GFA had confirmed his new mandate on 2 September, with the Portuguese coach tasked with leading Ghana into the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Ghana's immediate AFCON campaign has now suffered a major setback, with the Black Stars having lost to The Gambia after beginning the qualifying window with a defeat against Côte d'Ivoire.
The GFA is expected to announce the next steps regarding the national team's coaching position following the termination of Queiroz's agreement.
