CAF approve major changes to Champions League and Confederation Cup regulations

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved major changes to the regulations governing the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup ahead of the 2026/27 interclub season.

The decisions were taken during a virtual meeting of the CAF Executive Committee, chaired by CAF president Patrice Motsepe, on Friday, 2 October 2026.

Players can now represent more than one club

One of the biggest changes is the removal of the previous cup-tied restriction.

Under the revised regulations, players will now be permitted to represent more than one club during the same CAF interclub season.

This means a player who features for one club in the Champions League or Confederation Cup before moving to another club could subsequently represent the new club in the same CAF interclub campaign, subject to the competition's registration requirements.

The change provides clubs with greater flexibility during the season, particularly around the mid-season transfer window.

Clubs can register up to 40 players

CAF has also increased the maximum number of players that clubs can register during the season to 40.

In addition, clubs will be allowed to replace up to four players during the final registration period.

However, any player being replaced must not have featured in a CAF interclub match for the club during that season.

The amendment is expected to give clubs more room to manage injuries, transfers and squad demands as they progress through continental competition.

Disciplinary matters move to CAF Disciplinary Board

Another important amendment concerns disciplinary procedures.

CAF has decided that all disciplinary matters will now be referred directly to the CAF Disciplinary Board, removing that responsibility from the Interclub Competitions Committee.

The changes form part of CAF's wider effort to update its interclub competition regulations and provide greater clarity and flexibility for participating clubs.

CAF confirms other major dates

The Executive Committee also approved the CAF Competitions Calendar for the 2026–2030 period.

The 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament will take place from 1 to 15 November, while Senegal will host the 2026 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations from 28 November to 6 December.

CAF also confirmed that the 2026 CAF Awards will be held in Lagos, Nigeria, on 7 December, with Nigeria's CAF Ordinary General Assembly scheduled for 21 November.

The revised interclub regulations could have a significant impact on squad-building and transfer strategies for clubs competing in Africa's premier club competitions this season.
