Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw scored early in the second half to cancel out Linda Caicedo’s first-half opener at the Joie Stadium, earning City a point in their second league-phase fixture. Both sides have now drawn their opening two matches in the competition.
Caicedo gives Madrid the lead
Real Madrid started brightly and threatened City’s defence in the opening stages. However, it was the hosts who came closest to scoring first when Mary Fowler’s header from Alex Greenwood’s free-kick struck the underside of the crossbar inside the opening nine minutes.
Shaw also went close with a header that required a save from Madrid goalkeeper Merle Frohms.
The visitors took the lead in the 29th minute when Caicedo broke forward on the right and fired a low effort into the far corner, giving Real Madrid a 1-0 advantage at half-time.
Shaw brings City level
City returned from the break with greater urgency and found their equaliser six minutes into the second half.
Yui Hasegawa won possession and set up Shaw, who turned sharply before firing a composed finish into the far corner in the 51st minute.
The goal was Shaw’s eighth in 11 appearances in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, further extending her record as Manchester City’s leading scorer in the competition.
Both teams pushed for a winner as the match opened up. Substitute Beth Mead came close to putting City ahead with a header, while goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita made important saves to keep Real Madrid at bay.
Madrid thought they had snatched a late winner when Silvia Cristóbal found the net, but the goal was ruled out after referee Silvia Gasperotti had stopped play for an infringement involving Mead.
City pressed again in the closing moments, but neither side could find a decisive goal.
City take two points from two matches
The result leaves Manchester City with two points from their opening two league-phase matches, following their 1-1 draw away to Bayern Munich.
Andrée Jeglertz’s side will now turn their attention to domestic action, with Arsenal due to visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, 4 October.
