Bischof and Wirtz fire Germany to victory over Serbia as Klopp claims first win

Germany secured a 2-0 victory over Serbia in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday, 1 October 2026, giving head coach Jürgen Klopp his first win in charge of the national team.

Tom Bischof and Florian Wirtz scored at the Allianz Arena in Munich as Germany claimed their first three points of the Nations League campaign and ended a run of disappointing results.

Bischof breaks the deadlock

Germany dominated the opening stages, creating several opportunities while restricting Serbia’s attacking threat.

Serge Gnabry came close to opening the scoring in the 30th minute, but Serbia goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović produced an excellent save to keep the match goalless.

The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute. Florian Wirtz struck the post after a promising attacking move, but Bischof reacted quickest to the rebound and fired home to give Germany a deserved 1-0 lead.

Germany went into the break having controlled the contest, with Serbia struggling to create clear chances.

Wirtz seals the victory

Germany continued to press after the interval and doubled their advantage in the 61st minute.

Wirtz collected the ball from Maximilian Mittelstädt, drove into the penalty area and finished past Petrović to put the hosts firmly in control.

Serbia attempted to respond, and Strahinja Pavlović tested Germany goalkeeper Jonas Urbig shortly after coming on. Urbig made the save to preserve his clean sheet.

Germany managed the closing stages and held on for a 2-0 victory, giving Klopp his first win in his third match since returning to management.

Germany get their Nations League campaign moving

The result gave Germany their first win of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League campaign after their opening matches against the Netherlands and Greece.

The victory also marked a notable night for Bischof, who scored his first senior international goal, while debutants Jonas Urbig and Derry Scherhant featured in Klopp’s revamped starting line-up.

Germany will now turn their attention to their next fixture away to Greece on Sunday, 4 October.
