OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Edo Queens captain Valentina Uroko was named Woman of the Match after an outstanding performance that helped the Nigerian champions secure a dominant 5-1 victory over hosts USFA in the first semi-final of the WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers.
The number 14 delivered a complete display of leadership, strength and decisive impact at the Stade du 4 Août. In addition to organising the side from the heart of the pitch, Uroko scored a spectacular long-range free-kick in first-half stoppage time that made the score 3-0 and effectively ended the contest as a competitive contest.
Following the final whistle, the experienced midfielder received her trophy from Mr Philippe Tchere, Executive Director of WAFU-B (UFOA-B), in recognition of her influential contribution to one of the most impressive performances of the tournament so far.
Uroko’s goal came at a crucial moment. After Atume Doosuur had opened the scoring in the 17th minute and Chioma Moses had doubled the lead in the 43rd minute, the captain’s powerful free-kick just before the interval left USFA facing a mountain to climb. Edo Queens continued their relentless pressure after the break, with further goals from Doshima Tarnum and Aminat Folorunsho completing a comprehensive 5-1 win. USFA managed only a late consolation.
The result was particularly significant because USFA had entered the semi-final as the only unbeaten side in the competition and had not conceded a single goal during the group stage. Edo Queens dismantled that defensive record with clinical efficiency and controlled the match from start to finish.
Uroko has been a consistent presence and leader for Edo Queens throughout the campaign. Her ability to dictate tempo, win key duels and contribute in both phases of play has made her one of the standout figures in the Nigerian side. The Woman of the Match award underlines her importance as the team prepares for the final.
Edo Queens will now face Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the final later this week. The two sides met in the group stage, with Ampem Darkoa claiming a 2-1 victory. The rematch will decide which club represents WAFU Zone B at the main CAF Women’s Champions League and claims the regional title.
For Uroko and her teammates, the semi-final performance and individual recognition provide further momentum as they chase continental qualification. The captain’s leadership and quality continue to set the standard for a side that has shown both attacking brilliance and competitive resilience throughout the qualifiers in Burkina Faso.
