LONDON, England: Everton maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season after holding Tottenham Hotspur to a 0–0 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, while Spurs' alarming wait for a league goal continued.
Tottenham dominated possession and controlled much of the first half, but they repeatedly struggled to turn their territorial advantage into clear chances. Everton grew into the contest after the interval and created some of the better opportunities before Jordan Pickford produced a crucial late save to preserve a point for the visitors.
Spurs dominate without finding a breakthrough
Tottenham started aggressively and spent much of the opening period camped inside Everton's half.
The hosts moved the ball around confidently but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against an organised Everton defence. Jan Paul van Hecke came closest in the first half when he met a free-kick from Andy Robertson, but his close-range effort went over the crossbar.
Mateus Fernandes also went close after the interval, but his effort was comfortably dealt with as Tottenham's frustration continued.
The response from the home supporters underlined the desperation for a goal, with Fernandes' attempt greeted by ironic cheers from sections of the crowd.
Everton threaten after the break
Everton became increasingly dangerous as the match progressed.
Thierno Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall both had opportunities to break the deadlock, while Brennan Johnson also threatened as the visitors found more space behind Tottenham's defensive line.
Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský made important interventions to keep the scores level, ensuring Everton could not take advantage of their second-half opportunities.
At the other end, Savinho and Sandro Tonali were involved in Tottenham's attempts to find a winner, but Everton continued to defend resolutely.
Pickford denies Spurs late
Tottenham pushed forward during the closing stages as they searched desperately for their first league goal of the campaign.
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced a decisive late save to prevent Spurs from snatching victory and helped Sean Dyche's side secure another clean sheet.
The final whistle confirmed another frustrating afternoon for Tottenham, who have now failed to score in their opening four Premier League matches of the season — the first time in the club's history that they have started a league campaign with four consecutive goalless games.
Everton continue unbeaten run
For Everton, the point extends their unbeaten beginning to the campaign.
The Toffees have now collected six points from their first four league matches, with one victory and three draws. Their defensive organisation has been a major positive during the opening weeks of the season.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have only two points from four matches and remain without a Premier League goal. Their only goals so far this season have come in the League Cup against Charlton Athletic.
The result leaves Everton with plenty of encouragement, while Tottenham face mounting pressure to solve their extraordinary attacking problems.
