BUDAPEST, Hungary — Kenny Bednarek of the United States claimed his first major championship 100 metres title after winning the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship final in 9.85 seconds.
Jamaica’s world champion Oblique Seville finished second in 9.90. Fellow American Ronnie Baker took bronze in 9.93.
Bednarek had collected four consecutive major championship silver medals since 2021. On Saturday night at the Gyula Zsivótzky National Athletics Centre he finally struck gold.
The result completed an American sprint double after Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the women’s 100m in a world-leading 10.62.
Seville, the reigning world champion, could not match Bednarek off the blocks or through the finish. Baker completed a strong United States presence on the podium.
The three-day World Athletics Ultimate Championship, offering a $10 million prize pool across 28 events, continues in Budapest through Sunday.
