STRASBOURG, France: Paris Brunner produced another moment of brilliance as Monaco came from behind to draw 1–1 with Strasbourg at the Stade de la Meinau on Saturday, ending their perfect start to the Ligue 1 season but keeping them at the top of the table.
Monaco had won their opening three league matches, but Strasbourg proved a difficult opponent and deservedly took the lead early in the second half. Brunner's spectacular long-range strike in the 71st minute rescued a point for Filipe Luís' side, who remain unbeaten after four matches.
Strasbourg make the stronger start
Strasbourg looked the more dangerous side during the opening stages, with Monaco struggling to impose their usual attacking rhythm.
Gessime Yassine came close for the hosts in the first half, narrowly missing the target, while Monaco also had opportunities through their attacking players.
The visitors were forced into an early change when a Strasbourg challenge left one of their players requiring treatment, with Matthis Abline introduced in the 22nd minute.
Monaco gradually improved before half-time, but neither side could break the deadlock.
Sané own goal puts Strasbourg ahead
Strasbourg finally found the breakthrough seven minutes after the restart.
A dangerous free-kick from Joaquín Oso caused problems inside the Monaco penalty area, with defender Sadibou Sané unfortunately turning the ball into his own net.
The goal gave Strasbourg a deserved 1–0 advantage and forced Monaco to increase the pressure in search of a response.
Brunner produces a stunning equaliser
Monaco's response arrived in spectacular fashion.
In the 71st minute, Paris Brunner collected the ball just beyond halfway, carried it forward and unleashed a powerful long-range effort that flew into the top corner.
The strike was almost unstoppable and levelled the contest at 1–1. It also continued Brunner's remarkable scoring form, with the German forward now having five goals in seven matches for Monaco this season, according to reports following the game.
• Strasbourg: Sadibou Sané 52' (own goal)
• Monaco: Paris Brunner 71'
Monaco push for a late winner
The equaliser changed the momentum of the match, with Monaco finishing strongly as they searched for a fourth consecutive league victory.
The visitors thought they had found a late winner when Denis Zakaria put the ball in the net from a corner, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Monaco also appealed for a penalty in the closing stages after a challenge involving Matthis Abline, but the referee's decision stood following a VAR review.
Strasbourg held firm to secure a deserved point.
Monaco remain top of Ligue 1
The draw ended Monaco's run of three consecutive Ligue 1 victories, but Filipe Luís' side remain unbeaten.
Monaco now have 10 points from four matches, enough to keep them top of the table on goal difference ahead of Rennes, who also have 10 points.
Strasbourg, meanwhile, have seven points from their opening four matches and remain firmly in the early European places.
For Monaco, the comeback demonstrated their resilience, but the match also showed that their impressive early-season run will face increasingly difficult tests as the campaign progresses.
