MBOMBELA, South Africa — Defending champions Orlando Pirates extended their perfect start to the Betway Premiership season with a commanding 4-0 victory over newly promoted Kruger United at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Buccaneers remain unbeaten and sit clear at the top of the table with 13 points from five matches after another clinical display.
Gamphani Lungu gave Pirates the perfect start, converting a penalty in the third minute after an early foul in the box. The Zambian forward calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put the visitors ahead.
Pirates controlled large periods of the first half but had to wait until after the break to double their advantage. Boitumelo Radiopane made it 2-0 in the 54th minute, finishing a well-worked move to further ease any pressure on the champions.
Substitute Yanela Mbuthuma then took centre stage in the closing stages. The striker scored in the 79th minute to make it 3-0 before completing his brace deep into stoppage time with a fourth goal in the 92nd minute.
The emphatic result underlines the strong early form of Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side, who have combined domestic consistency with progress in the MTN8. Pirates already sit three points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns and further ahead of Kaizer Chiefs in the early standings.
Kruger United, still adjusting to life in the top flight, struggled to contain the visitors’ attacking threat and remain near the foot of the table. The Village Boys have now conceded 11 goals in five matches.
Pirates will take confidence from the performance as they continue to juggle league and cup commitments. The squad showed depth and quality, with several players contributing to a comprehensive away victory.
The champions remain the team to beat in the early stages of the campaign, with their attacking options firing on all cylinders. Attention will now turn to the next round of fixtures as they look to maintain their position at the summit.
