Kawempe Stars Dominate Individual Awards at CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers

KIGALI, Rwanda — Ugandan side Kawempe Muslim Ladies swept the major individual honours at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers after their historic triumph in the regional tournament.

The Valley Warriors became the first club from Uganda to qualify for the main CAF Women’s Champions League after defeating Kenya Police Bullets 1-0 after extra time in Monday’s final at the Kigali Pelé Stadium. Captain Agnes Nabukenya scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute to secure the landmark victory.

Nabukenya was deservedly named Most Valuable Player of the tournament for her outstanding contributions throughout the competition. The influential midfielder not only led her side to the title but also played a pivotal role in their unbeaten and miserly campaign.

Ethiopian striker Emush Daniel Dandamo of CBE FC claimed the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals. The forward’s clinical finishing helped CBE secure third place after a strong showing that included a heavy victory in the bronze-medal match.

Kawempe goalkeeper Saidah Namwanje was recognised as the Best Goalkeeper. Namwanje kept a series of clean sheets across the qualifiers, underlining the defensive solidity that saw her team concede no goals on their way to the title.

The Fair Play Award went to Yei Joint Stars FC of South Sudan, who impressed with their sportsmanship despite finishing fourth.

Kawempe Muslim Ladies completed an exceptional campaign, winning all their matches while remaining unbeaten and without conceding. Their success marks a significant milestone for Ugandan women’s club football and ensures representation at the continental finals later this year.

The individual awards ceremony, attended by CECAFA officials, celebrated the standout performers from a competitive qualifying tournament that featured ten teams from across the East and Central African region.

Nabukenya, Namwanje and their teammates will now prepare for the challenges of the main CAF Women’s Champions League, carrying the hopes of Ugandan football onto the bigger stage.
