The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the African champions and becomes the club’s seventh addition of the transfer window.
Sundowns confirmed the move on Friday, ending days of speculation. The club said it was “excited to welcome Thabang Matuludi to the Masandawana family.”
Matuludi arrives after establishing himself as one of the standout full-backs in the Betway Premiership. He made more than 70 appearances for Polokwane City across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing two assists. His consistent displays earned him a place in Hugo Broos’ South Africa squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The transfer strengthens Sundowns’ options at right-back following a long-term injury to first-choice defender Khuliso Mudau. The Tshwane giants also recently added Deano van Rooyen, creating competition in the position alongside existing options such as Thapelo Morena.
Sundowns beat rivals Orlando Pirates to Matuludi’s signature. The player had been linked with both clubs throughout the window after a strong period at Polokwane City.
The deal forms part of a busy recruitment drive as Sundowns look to defend the CAF Champions League title and challenge for the Betway Premiership crown. Other recent arrivals include Cassius Mailula, Siyanda Ndlovu, Antonio van Wyk, Katlego Ntsabeleng, Deano van Rooyen and Thabo Cele.
Born on 14 January 1999 in Ngwaritsi, Matuludi came through the ranks at Polokwane and helped the side establish itself in the top flight after promotion. He made his senior international debut in 2024 and has since added World Cup experience to his résumé.
The defender now steps up to one of Africa’s most demanding clubs, where he will compete for minutes across domestic and continental competitions under head coach Miguel Cardoso.
