Zurich, Switzerland: FIFA has rejected claims from the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, that Morocco will host the 2030 FIFA World Cup final, insisting that the venue for the tournament's showpiece match has not yet been decided.
Lekjaa was reported as saying that the final would take place at the Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane, near Casablanca, where a new stadium with a planned capacity of around 115,000 is currently under construction.
However, FIFA moved quickly to distance itself from the announcement, describing reports that the final had already been awarded to Morocco as “false and misleading” and reiterating that the decision would be taken through the official process at a later date.
The dispute has reopened a growing debate between Morocco and Spain over the biggest match of the 2030 tournament.
Morocco, Spain and Portugal were awarded hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup, while Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will stage three centenary matches to mark 100 years since the inaugural World Cup in Uruguay in 1930.
Spain is also pushing strongly to stage the final, with the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid among the leading candidates. Spanish officials have argued that the country has a strong case given its infrastructure, football tradition and significant role in the joint hosting project.
The Hassan II Stadium, meanwhile, would provide Morocco with a spectacular potential venue. The planned 115,000-capacity arena is expected to become one of the world's largest football-specific stadiums once completed.
The controversy has also acquired a political dimension. Morocco has maintained close relations with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, while FIFA has previously denied suggestions that political considerations had already resulted in an agreement to award the final to Morocco.
For now, however, FIFA's position is clear: Morocco has not been officially awarded the 2030 World Cup final.
The final venue remains undecided, leaving the competition between Morocco's Hassan II Stadium and Spain's leading candidates set to continue until FIFA makes an official announcement.
