Maitland-Niles Denies Manchester United at the Death as Everton Draw 2-2

LIVERPOOL, England — Manchester United led twice at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and still left with only a point after Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a stoppage-time equaliser on his Everton debut.

The Premier League match finished 2-2. Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead a minute into the second half. Tyrique George equalised in the 83rd minute. Substitute Benjamin Šeško headed United back in front in the 88th. Maitland-Niles then smashed in from 30 yards in the sixth minute of added time.

The first half was tight. Bruno Fernandes struck the bar. Thierno Barry headed over when well placed. United broke the deadlock when Kobbie Mainoo found Mbeumo on the right. The Cameroon forward drove inside past three defenders and curled a left-foot shot beyond Jordan Pickford.

Everton grew into the contest. Hayden Hackney slipped the ball to George, who hammered past Senne Lammens at the near post. Šeško, on as a substitute, met Luke Shaw’s cross to restore the lead and looked to have won it. Maitland-Niles, signed in the final hours of the window, had other ideas. The loose ball rolled out of the box and he struck first time.

United have four points from three matches and sit in mid-table. Everton are unbeaten, with five points from three games. Michael Carrick’s side will regret the late lapse after controlling spells of the second half. David Moyes will take the point after a week of transfer frustration on Merseyside.

United remain a work in progress: capable of a goal as good as Mbeumo’s and a finish as sharp as Šeško’s, yet still unable to close a game they had won twice. Everton’s last kick was the moment that defined Sunday.
