Iñaki Williams Retires from Ghana National Team After Four Years with Black Stars

ACCRA, Ghana — Athletic Bilbao captain Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football with the Ghana national team, bringing an end to a four-year chapter with the Black Stars.

The 32-year-old forward confirmed the decision in a heartfelt statement on Friday, reflecting on his time representing the country of his parents. Williams earned 28 caps and scored two goals for Ghana after switching allegiance from Spain in 2022.

“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end,” Williams said. “I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt.”

Born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, Williams made one appearance for Spain in a 2016 friendly before opting to play for Ghana. He made his Black Stars debut in September 2022 and went on to feature at three major tournaments: the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His final appearance came in Ghana’s 1-0 defeat by Colombia in the round of 32 at this summer’s World Cup, which ended the Black Stars’ campaign. Williams helped Ghana reach the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Reflecting on the personal significance of his international career, the Athletic captain added: “Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.”

“Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am. Medaase. Always Ghana.”

Williams’ two international goals came in World Cup qualifying, including a dramatic late winner against Madagascar in 2023. Although his goal return was modest, he remained a regular presence in the squad under successive coaches and provided experience and leadership during a transitional period for the national team.

The retirement allows Williams to focus fully on his club career at Athletic Bilbao, where he remains a key figure and club captain. His decision closes a notable chapter for a player who bridged European club football and his Ghanaian heritage on the international stage.
