NAIROBI, Kenya — Tusker FC captain Abud Omar has called on his teammates to stay focused and share the burden of responsibility when the Brewers host Sudanese side Al Ahli Madani in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round tie on Saturday.
The decisive encounter will take place at Nyayo National Stadium, with the aggregate score locked at 2-2 after a dramatic first leg in Kigali. Tusker had led 2-0 at half-time through a brace from Nigerian striker Victor Mbaoma, only for Al-Samani Al-Sawi to force a draw with a second-half strike and a stoppage-time penalty.
Speaking ahead of the return fixture, Omar stressed the need for a collective approach.
“We have prepared well, and we have enough ammunition to deal with them,” the captain said. “I told all the players that when we go onto that pitch, it is not all about Abud; it is all of us. If I cannot score a free kick, someone else needs to step up and score. It's a team and a collective responsibility.”
The experienced defender, who has recovered from a recent ankle issue, emphasised that every player must be ready to contribute if Tusker are to progress. The Brewers know that a victory on home soil will secure their place in the second preliminary round, while a low-scoring draw could also prove sufficient under the competition’s away-goals or aggregate rules.
Coach Julien Mette has similarly urged greater concentration after the side surrendered a commanding lead in Rwanda. The Frenchman believes the first-leg experience has given his players a clearer understanding of their opponents and that the team is better prepared for the home decider.
Tusker are making their return to continental football after a four-year absence. The club last featured in CAF competition during the 2021/22 season and carry early-season momentum after lifting the FKF Super Cup with a 3-1 win over Gor Mahia. Progression from this tie would set up a meeting with either AS Kigali of Rwanda or Al-Hilal Benghazi of Libya in the next round.
For Omar and his teammates, Saturday’s match represents both an opportunity and a test of character. Having let a strong position slip once, the Brewers will be determined not to allow another lapse in concentration on home soil as they chase a place deeper into the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
