The 25-year-old opened the scoring early in the second half with a stooping header from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross, netting for the third successive competitive England match. The goal set Thomas Tuchel’s side on the way to a much-needed win after a passive first half.
Gordon later told ITV he believed it was the only headed goal of his professional career. “It’s probably my only header,” he said. “I’m the worst header you’ll ever see.
“I’m really proud to score it, I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve worked on heading in training. I don’t think I’ve ever scored one, so I’m really happy.”
In fact, his only other recorded headed goal among 85 career strikes came for England Under-21s against hosts Israel at the 2023 European Championship.
Gordon also reflected on England’s response after the Czech Republic were reduced to 10 men in the 25th minute. “When they had a man down, we were a little bit too passive and we needed to be more dominant, go for the throat and really try to put games away.”
Captain Harry Kane added a second goal later in the half as England secured their first points of the Nations League campaign. Gordon’s unlikely header proved the decisive moment in turning the contest in the visitors’ favour.
