Derbyshire Police confirmed on Friday that no further action will be taken against the 31-year-old.
Carse was arrested in the early hours of 23 August in Derby city centre following a night out with Durham teammates. Officers attended Molly Malones nightclub after reports of an incident. He was initially arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly but was later “de-arrested” after his details were taken.
Police subsequently investigated allegations of assault. After identifying and speaking to the alleged victim, the force decided to close the case.
In a statement, Derbyshire Police said: “An investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city centre has been closed. Officers attended Molly Malones in the Wardwick, Derby, in the early hours of Sunday 23 August. A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was then de-arrested after his details were taken by officers.”
Despite the police decision, Carse remains under investigation by the Cricket Regulator, the disciplinary body of the England and Wales Cricket Board. The regulator is assessing whether he has a case to answer under its code of conduct.
Carse has continued to play for Durham since the incident and helped the county win the Second Division title in the County Championship. However, he has been overlooked by England selectors for both Test and white-ball squads in recent series.
England’s white-ball coach Brendon McCullum said this week that Carse needed to “get his house in order” before pushing for a return to the national side.
The incident is the latest in a series of off-field controversies involving England players that have drawn public criticism from senior figures in the game.
