León’s outstanding finish was selected as the league’s best goal for the month, earning recognition in the first set of Betway Premiership Monthly Awards for the 2026/27 season.
The Colombian forward’s strike stood out among a strong list of contenders, with the judging panel ultimately favouring his technically impressive volley.
León beats strong competition
León was competing against Mamelodi Sundowns teammate Teboho Mokoena and Siwelele FC forward Vincent Pule, whose goals were also nominated for the monthly prize.
However, the Sundowns forward's volley against AmaZulu proved the decisive entry and secured him the individual honour.
The award adds another piece of recognition to León’s growing profile since his arrival at Sundowns, with the Colombian making an impact in South African football.
Three winners announced
The Premier Soccer League announced three major individual awards for August.
• Player of the Month: Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya — AmaZulu
• Coach of the Month: Abdeslam Ouaddou — Orlando Pirates
• Goal of the Month: Brayan León — Mamelodi Sundowns
Ngwenya earned the Player of the Month award after scoring five goals and providing one assist in four matches for AmaZulu during August. His prolific start to the campaign helped the Durban club climb to fourth in the Betway Premiership standings.
Ouaddou, meanwhile, guided reigning champions Orlando Pirates to three victories and one draw during their opening four league matches, helping them establish themselves among the early leaders.
León's spectacular strike takes top prize
For León, the Goal of the Month award provides individual recognition for one of the standout moments of the opening weeks of the new Betway Premiership campaign.
His stunning volley against AmaZulu ultimately captured the attention of the judging panel and earned the Colombian forward the first Goal of the Month award of the 2026/27 season.
The honour also gives Sundowns a presence among the first monthly award winners, with León's technical quality in front of goal being rewarded after an impressive opening month.
The three August awards underline the strong individual performances that have helped shape the early stages of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
