PRETORIA, South Africa — Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed that defender Thato Sibiya has signed a new long-term contract with the club and will join French Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille on a season-long loan.
In an official statement released on the club’s social media channels, Sundowns said: “Mamelodi Sundowns are pleased to announce that Thato Sibiya has signed a new long-term contract with the club. Mamelodi Sundowns have also reached an agreement with French Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille for Thato to join the club on a season-long loan. We wish Thato all the best for the season ahead and his next challenge in France.”
Dual Agreement Secured
The arrangement allows Sundowns to retain the young defender’s long-term registration while providing him with the opportunity to gain experience in one of Europe’s top leagues. Lille have also secured an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the 2026/27 season.
Sibiya will initially link up with Lille’s reserve side (Pro 2 group) as he adapts to French football and the demands of the European game.
Rising Prospect
The 20-year-old left-back has emerged as one of South Africa’s most promising young talents. He was a key member of the Amajita side that won the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations and also featured at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
At club level, Sibiya broke into the Mamelodi Sundowns first team last season, making a handful of appearances across the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League as the Brazilians claimed continental glory.
Player and Coach Reaction
Sibiya expressed his excitement at the move, revealing that he sought advice from Sundowns teammate and former Lille striker Lebo Mothiba before accepting the opportunity. Mothiba encouraged him to take the step without hesitation.
Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso, who previously worked in France, described the loan as a “fantastic opportunity” for the youngster’s development, citing Lille’s strong track record in nurturing young players.
The deal represents another example of Mamelodi Sundowns facilitating pathways for academy products to gain high-level experience abroad while protecting the club’s long-term interests.
