LONDON, England — Newcastle United claimed an impressive 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday as the Premier League’s second matchday continued, while Liverpool were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
Anthony Elanga opened the scoring for the Magpies in the 62nd minute before Yoane Wissa added a second ten minutes later to condemn Roberto De Zerbi’s side to a second successive defeat. Tottenham remain without a point or a goal after two matches.
At Anfield, Dan Ndoye gave Forest an early lead in the 24th minute. Alexander Isak equalised for Liverpool on the hour mark, but Morgan Gibbs-White restored the visitors’ advantage from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. New signing Víctor Muñoz rescued a point for the Reds with an 82nd-minute equaliser on his home debut under new manager Andoni Iraola.
In the other Saturday fixtures, Hull City continued their perfect start to life back in the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win at fellow newly promoted side Coventry City. Liam Millar scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute.
Bournemouth and Everton shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium. Alex Scott put the Cherries ahead in the 41st minute, only for James Tarkowski to equalise deep into stoppage time for David Moyes’ side.
The results leave Manchester City and Hull City as the only teams with maximum points from two matches. Newcastle sit among the early challengers, while Tottenham find themselves at the foot of the table after a difficult opening to the campaign.
Sunday’s fixtures include Chelsea against Brighton, Leeds United versus Brentford, Sunderland hosting Fulham, and Manchester United taking on Ipswich Town.
