PRETORIA, South Africa — Mamelodi Sundowns produced a dominant attacking display to defeat AmaZulu 5-2 at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night, moving level on points with Betway Premiership leaders Orlando Pirates.
Brayan León scored twice, with further goals from Teboho Mokoena, Tashreeq Matthews and substitute Bennet Mokoena. Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya netted both of AmaZulu’s goals.
First-Half Control
Sundowns took the lead in the 25th minute when León finished with a powerful volley after Cassius Mailula’s effort was deflected into his path. Seven minutes later, Teboho Mokoena marked his return from injury in spectacular fashion, curling a free-kick from outside the box into the top corner to make it 2-0 at half-time.
Second-Half Goals
AmaZulu reduced the deficit immediately after the restart through Ngwenya in the 46th minute. Sundowns responded quickly, with Matthews restoring the two-goal cushion in the 51st minute.
León completed his brace in the 66th minute after good work from Matthews, before Ngwenya struck again in the 70th minute to make it 4-2. Substitute Bennet Mokoena sealed the victory with a composed finish in stoppage time.
Table Implications
The result keeps Sundowns unbeaten in the league and moves them level on 10 points with Orlando Pirates after four matches. It also extended their remarkable home unbeaten run.
The emphatic win served as a strong response following their recent MTN8 semi-final first-leg setback against Golden Arrows. Coach Miguel Cardoso’s side will now turn their attention to the second leg while continuing their strong start to the Betway Premiership campaign.
AmaZulu, despite Ngwenya’s brace, remain mid-table and will look to tighten defensively in their next fixtures.
