NAIROBI, Kenya — A Gor Mahia supporter known as Toto has described a terrifying ordeal in which she was allegedly assaulted by a security officer during the violence and stampede that followed Sunday’s FKF Super Cup final between Gor Mahia and Tusker FC at Nyayo National Stadium.
According to her account, Toto had left home simply to cheer for the team she loves deeply. What began as a day of support ended in fear for her life after she was caught up in the chaos that erupted after the match.
Toto stated that she was unarmed and peaceful when a rogue officer kicked her on the neck. Unable to run due to the stampede and the danger around her, she sought cover. Even in that position of vulnerability, she claims security personnel hounded her out and left her in a state where she felt she had nearly been killed.
She further alleged that Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) officers colluded to shield the police officer responsible for the assault by helping him go into hiding. As a result, Toto was unable to identify the officer who attacked her.
The incident has prompted calls for justice. Supporters and observers are urging the relevant authorities and the Football Kenya Federation to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that Toto receives justice. The account highlights the risks ordinary fans can face when matches descend into disorder.
Toto’s experience underscores a broader concern about the safety of supporters who attend fixtures solely to back their teams. Many believe that no fan should be subjected to physical assault or intimidation for simply exercising their right to support a club.
The Football Kenya Federation has already issued a strong statement condemning the violence, disorder and hooliganism that marked the aftermath of the Super Cup final. The Federation has pledged to work with authorities, review footage and reports, and pursue those found responsible for misconduct, whether fans, officials or security personnel.
Toto’s case has now added a personal dimension to the official concerns raised by FKF. Calls for accountability continue to grow, with demands that the officers involved be identified and that due process be followed to protect the rights and safety of all football supporters in Kenya.
Further updates are expected as investigations into the incidents at Nyayo National Stadium progress.
