Greats from Mufulira Wanderers, Nkana FC and Kabwe Warriors are expected to battle against Zanaco’s stars of yesteryear in a competition designed to honour Zambia’s football heritage while inspiring the next generation.
Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe described the historic legends showdown as more than entertainment. He said the tournament should serve as a platform for mentorship, using former football stars to guide and inspire young players through interaction, community outreach and programmes that create meaningful opportunities.
Chileshe added that the presence of icons from some of Zambia’s legendary clubs would also showcase the nation’s rich football history.
“We commend Zanaco Football Club and Brand-Line Africa for developing an initiative that celebrates Zambia’s rich football heritage and recognises the former players who contributed to the development and success of the game,” Lengwe said.
“Our football legends are an important part of Zambia’s sporting history. Their achievements continue to inspire young players, supporters and communities across the country. This tournament provides an opportunity to honour their contribution while reconnecting them with the clubs and supporters they proudly represented.”
Lengwe said FAZ viewed the tournament as a means of strengthening cooperation within the football family and confirmed that the association would provide guidance on regulations, player eligibility, fixtures, match officials and other technical requirements.
Zanaco Football Club Chief Executive Officer Owen Chimpinde said the competition aligned with the club’s vision of using football as a tool for positive social transformation. He noted that the tournament had been created to celebrate the icons who brought joy to fans during their playing careers.
Kabwe Warriors legend Chintu Kampamba said the event would allow young footballers to appreciate the country’s football history and emulate the values that made previous generations successful. Mufulira Wanderers General Secretary Mumba Mwila described it as an important platform for strengthening relationships among clubs while promoting friendship, sportsmanship and quality entertainment for supporters.
The inaugural Zanaco Legends Tournament will feature semi-finals on 31 October at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, with the final scheduled for 21 November at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.
