DAKAR, Senegal — Nigeria’s Gift Bright produced a sensational performance to win gold in the Boys’ 100 metres final at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games on Sunday, clocking a personal best of 10.28 seconds with a legal wind reading of +1.7.
Bright, who became the first Nigerian to claim the men’s 100m title at the Youth Olympic Games, dominated the final from start to finish. He left the rest of the field trailing as he powered across the line well clear of the competition.
Zhang Hangyu of China took the silver medal in 10.57 seconds, while Poland’s Szymon Dolega secured bronze with a time of 10.61 seconds.
The victory marks a major milestone for Nigerian athletics at the Youth Olympics. Bright’s impressive personal best underlined his status as one of the standout sprint talents at the Games, the first Olympic event ever staged on African soil.
The result came on a memorable day for Nigerian sprinting in Dakar. Earlier, compatriot Rosemary Nwankwo had also struck gold in the women’s 100 metres, giving Team Nigeria a remarkable double in the premier short sprint events.
Bright’s commanding win further highlights the depth of emerging talent within the Nigerian contingent. His composed and explosive display in the final confirmed the progress he has made, turning potential into a landmark achievement on the biggest stage for young athletes.
The 2026 Youth Olympic Games continue to provide a platform for the next generation of global stars. For Gift Bright, the gold medal in Dakar represents both a personal triumph and a significant moment in Nigeria’s sporting history at this level.
Nigeria’s young athletes have now firmly announced their presence at these Games, with Bright’s historic success standing as one of the highlights of the athletics programme so far.
