Doris Boaduwaa broke the deadlock for Ghana, finishing a well-worked move after being set up by experienced full-back Portia Boakye. The goal settled any early nerves and allowed the Ghanaians to dictate the tempo.
After the interval Ghana continued to press forward. The second goal arrived via an own goal by Eleia Vieira, forced by a dangerous and precise cross from Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah that left the Cape Verde defence with no option but to turn the ball into their own net.
Cape Verde, competing at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the first time, defended resolutely at times and looked to counter, but they were unable to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Ghanaian back line.
The result gives Ghana an ideal start in Group D as they chase a place in the knockout stages, while Cape Verde will aim to build on their spirited debut performance in their remaining fixtures.
