Nigeria's Flamingos make history with 3-1 victory over Brazil to reach U-17 Women's World Cup final

Rabat, Morocco — Nigeria's Flamingos have qualified for their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in a thrilling semi-final encounter on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.

The Nigerian youngsters delivered an impressive second-half performance, scoring three times to overcome their South American opponents and move within one victory of becoming world champions.

After a goalless first half, Queen Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi provided the assist as Joseph finished to give Nigeria the breakthrough.

The Flamingos doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Awawu Bashiru found the back of the net, with Joseph turning provider on this occasion.

Bashiru struck again in the 80th minute to complete her brace and put Nigeria firmly in control. Oluebube Umejiaku supplied the assist for the third goal.

Brazil managed to pull one back in the 89th minute through Greise Kelly, who headed home following an assist from Yasmin Queiroz. However, the late consolation could not prevent Nigeria from securing a historic victory.

The final whistle sparked celebrations as the Flamingos booked their place in the final for the first time in the history of the competition.

Nigeria surpass previous best

The achievement takes Nigeria beyond their previous best performance at the tournament, a third-place finish at the 2022 edition in India.

The Flamingos have enjoyed an impressive campaign in Morocco despite beginning with a 2-1 defeat to Poland. They responded with victories over Puerto Rico, defending champions North Korea and Mexico before edging Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals through Azeezat Oduntan's 89th-minute penalty.

Their victory over Brazil now guarantees Nigeria at least a silver medal and gives the team an opportunity to claim the country's first-ever U-17 Women's World Cup title.

Japan await Nigeria in the final

Nigeria will face Japan in Saturday's final after the Asian side defeated defending champions North Korea in the other semi-final.

The Flamingos will now turn their attention to the decisive encounter as they aim to crown a historic campaign with the world title.
