Yaw Ampofo Ankrah Removed as NSA Director-General Amid World Cup Visa Controversy

ACCRA, Ghana — Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has been removed as Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) following controversy surrounding an alleged 2026 FIFA World Cup visa facilitation scheme.

The development comes after claims that more than US$600,000 was collected from applicants, with some reportedly charged up to US$8,000 for assistance with World Cup-related visas.

The allegations prompted a police investigation. The NSA has denied authorising the scheme or collecting any money.

Authorities have stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that the allegations do not establish criminal liability at this stage.

Ankrah’s removal marks a significant change at the top of Ghana’s sports administration as the country continues its preparations and engagements linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Further updates are expected as the probe continues.
