Jesus’ comments came after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday, 30 September, following the coach’s announcement that the 41-year-old would not start Thursday’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.
In a video report published on Thursday, Al Jazeera said Jesus stood by his decision not to play Ronaldo against Norway, despite the controversy surrounding the captain’s exit.
Jesus explains decision
Ronaldo remained on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway on Sunday, despite warming up during the match.
Jesus acknowledged that the forward was unhappy after preparing to enter the game but ultimately not being used. The coach maintained, however, that the final decision rested with him.
The Portugal manager had also indicated that Gonçalo Ramos would start against Denmark, with Ronaldo again set to begin on the bench.
Ronaldo promises to explain his departure
Ronaldo announced his departure from the camp after a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
“Following the national team manager’s press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team’s training camp,” Ronaldo said.
The Portugal captain added that he would explain his reasons “in due course” and wished his team-mates success in the upcoming fixtures.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed his departure, stating that preparations would continue with the remaining 24 players.
Portugal prepare without their captain
Ronaldo’s exit means Portugal will face Denmark without their record goalscorer, while questions remain over the circumstances surrounding his departure.
Neither Ronaldo nor the federation has provided a detailed public explanation beyond the statements already released.
For now, Jesus has maintained his position on the selection decision, while Portugal turn their attention to their Nations League commitments.
