Traoré Says Burkina Faso Will Intervene in Football even if FIFA Suspends Them

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — President Ibrahim Traoré says his government will take charge of football in Burkina Faso, and that the risk of a FIFA suspension will not stop it.

“We have no choice; we have to step in, regardless of whether we get suspended or not,” Traoré said. He framed the move as a push for better organisation, infrastructure, player support and conditions in which the game can develop. “We are going to inject new energy so that people feel more at ease and can give their best.”

FIFA’s statutes bar government interference in the running of a national association. Federations that are judged to have lost independence can be suspended, which blocks international matches, funding and access to FIFA and CAF competitions. Traoré’s wording accepts that risk in public.

The statement sits alongside a wider sporting ambition. Late last month he said Burkina Faso could host the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations alone if it chose to, and that a three-country bid was also possible. “Even Burkina Faso alone, if we decide to host the AFCON in 2032, we will do it,” he said then.

Burkina Faso have hosted regional tournaments but not the senior men’s AFCON. The Stallions’ recent competitive record has raised the profile of the national team, which makes any break with FIFA more costly than it would have been a decade ago.

Traoré has not set out who would run the federation, how elections would work, or what happens to the current leadership of the Burkinabé association. The line he has drawn is political: the state will intervene, and a suspension is a price he says the country is prepared to pay.
