Naples, Italy — Scott McTominay has been medically cleared to return to competitive football for Napoli after recovering from a mild, benign heart arrhythmia that required an ablation procedure in September.
The 29-year-old Scotland international underwent the planned procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital on 8 September and subsequently completed a period of rest and individual training before undergoing further medical examinations. Napoli confirmed on Wednesday that the midfielder had passed the necessary tests and was fit to resume sporting activity.
McTominay returns to full team training
Napoli said McTominay had undergone further diagnostic tests which confirmed his fitness to play, allowing him to rejoin his team-mates in full training after a period of working separately.
The clearance represents the final major step in his recovery and means he is now available for selection by Napoli head coach Massimiliano Allegri.
His reintegration is nevertheless expected to be gradual as Napoli manage his return to full competitive fitness.
Midfielder had been sidelined since August
McTominay has not played since 30 August, when he featured for Napoli before the heart rhythm issue was subsequently identified.
The condition was described by the club as mild and benign, but medical intervention was considered necessary. Napoli's medical staff detected the irregularity before the midfielder underwent the successful ablation procedure.
He subsequently missed Napoli's 3-2 Serie A defeat to Inter Milan and their Champions League defeat to Arsenal, as well as Scotland's international fixtures during the recovery period.
Possible return against Frosinone
McTominay could now be in contention for Napoli's Serie A meeting with Frosinone on Saturday, although his availability for the match will depend on Allegri's assessment of his fitness following his return to group training.
Italian reports indicate that a gradual reintegration is expected rather than an immediate return to a full 90-minute workload.
The timing is significant for Napoli, who face a demanding schedule in the weeks ahead.
McTominay remains an important figure for Napoli
Since joining Napoli from Manchester United in 2024, McTominay has established himself as an important player for the Italian club.
He played a key role in Napoli's 2024/25 Serie A title-winning campaign, scoring 27 goals in his first 82 appearances for the club, according to recent reports.
His return therefore provides a major boost to Allegri as Napoli prepare for a busy run of domestic and European fixtures.
After successfully completing his medical clearance, McTominay is now back with the Napoli squad and available for selection, bringing an end to the enforced absence caused by his heart condition.
