Flamingos begin final Morocco preparations ahead of Poland World Cup opener

Casablanca, Morocco: Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have intensified their preparations for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after holding their first training session in Morocco ahead of their opening Group B fixture against Poland.

The Nigerian youngsters trained at the Women’s Football Complex following their arrival in Morocco, with head coach Akeem Busari using the session to continue fine-tuning his squad ahead of the tournament.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that the Flamingos arrived in Morocco on Wednesday, October 7, as they began the final phase of preparations for the global competition.

Flamingos face Poland in World Cup opener

Nigeria will begin its Group B campaign against Poland on Saturday, October 17, with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Morocco time.

The Flamingos will then face Puerto Rico on October 20, before completing their group-stage campaign against defending champions Korea DPR on October 23.

All three of Nigeria’s group matches are scheduled to take place at the Women’s Football Complex in Rabat.

Korea DPR provides major test

The final group fixture against Korea DPR is expected to be Nigeria’s toughest test, with the Asian side entering the tournament as the defending champions.

Korea DPR have been one of the most successful teams in the history of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, while Nigeria will be looking to build momentum from their recent regional success.

The Flamingos secured their place in Morocco after winning the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Championship, providing the team with valuable competitive preparation ahead of the World Cup.

Nigeria targeting another deep World Cup run

The 2026 tournament will be the Flamingos’ ninth appearance at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s best finish came in 2022, when the team claimed the bronze medal after reaching the semi-finals. The Flamingos will now hope to go beyond that achievement in Morocco.

The expanded 2026 tournament features 24 teams, with the top two sides from each group and the four best third-placed teams advancing to the Round of 16.

With more than a week remaining before their opening match, Busari and his players have time to adapt to the conditions in Morocco, sharpen their tactical approach and build towards their first major test against Poland.

The Flamingos’ preparations in Casablanca will therefore be crucial as Nigeria begins its latest quest for success on the global stage.
