Rangers suffer major blow as Igor Shesterkin ruled out for the season

Washington, United States — The New York Rangers have suffered a significant setback after star goaltender Igor Shesterkin was ruled out for the remainder of the 2026–27 NHL season with a lower-body injury.

The 30-year-old Russian sustained the injury during the Rangers’ 3–1 defeat to the Washington Capitals on Friday, 9 October. The club confirmed the season-ending blow on Saturday, leaving New York facing the challenge of continuing its campaign without one of its most influential players.

Shesterkin suffers injury against Capitals

The incident occurred during the second period at Capital One Arena. Shesterkin scrambled back towards his goal after challenging an opposing attacker, appearing to jam his right skate against the goalpost.

His right leg bent awkwardly as he fell in the crease, and he remained on the ice in considerable discomfort before receiving medical attention.

Teammates Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson helped him off the ice without placing weight on his injured leg.

Shesterkin had stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced before leaving the game. Dylan Garand replaced him and made 11 saves as Washington went on to secure the victory.

Rangers face goaltending crisis

The injury leaves New York with a difficult situation in goal, particularly because backup Joonas Korpisalo is also sidelined with a lower-body injury.

Korpisalo is expected to miss several weeks, according to reports, increasing the responsibility on Garand, 24, who has limited NHL experience.

Garand demonstrated his ability earlier in the season by recording a 2–0 shutout against the Detroit Red Wings on 2 October. He will now have an opportunity to take on a more prominent role while the Rangers assess their options.

New York may also explore the goaltending market if it decides additional cover is necessary.

A significant loss for New York

Shesterkin had made an impressive start to the campaign, recording a 3–1 win-loss record with a goals-against average of around 1.79 and a save percentage of .927 in five appearances.

The 2022 Vezina Trophy winner, awarded to the NHL’s top goaltender, is widely regarded as a central figure in the Rangers’ ambitions. His absence represents a substantial challenge for a team seeking to build on its early-season form.

Captain J.T. Miller acknowledged the impact of the injury, describing Shesterkin as a pillar of the team and urging his teammates to respond collectively.

Rangers must regroup after setback

New York had opened the season with encouraging results, but losing its first-choice goaltender and backup in quick succession complicates its plans.

The Rangers will need strong performances from Garand and the players in front of him while Shesterkin begins his recovery.

The club’s immediate priority will be to stabilise the position and maintain its competitive start to the season despite the absence of one of the NHL’s leading goaltenders.
