Mombasa, Kenya — Mombasa United took a slender but valuable advantage in the FKF Premier League promotion/relegation playoff, defeating Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 in the first leg at Mbaraki Sports Club on Thursday.
The National Super League side will head to Nairobi for the decisive second leg on 6 October with a one-goal advantage, while Kariobangi Sharks remain within touching distance of retaining their top-flight status.
The two clubs are battling for a place in the 2026/27 FKF Premier League, with the aggregate winner of the two-legged contest securing the final position in the 18-team top flight.
Mombasa United strike twice
Mombasa United made home advantage count as Dennis Toeri and Tanzania-born striker Rashidi Waziri found the net for the hosts.
Kariobangi Sharks responded through Dalvin Wayne, who reduced the deficit late in the match to ensure the Nairobi club still has a realistic opportunity to overturn the tie in the return fixture.
The 2-1 scoreline means Mombasa United will take a narrow advantage into the second leg, but the tie remains finely poised with 90 minutes still to play.
Sharks face crucial return leg
The return fixture is scheduled for Tuesday, 6 October, in Nairobi, where Kariobangi Sharks will have home advantage.
Mombasa United need to avoid defeat by more than one goal to advance on aggregate, while Sharks must win by at least two goals to overturn the first-leg deficit. A one-goal victory for Sharks would leave the aggregate score level, with the applicable competition regulations determining the next step.
The official FKF ticketing information confirms that the first leg was played at Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa, with kick-off at 2pm EAT.
Playoff follows lengthy Kenyan football dispute
The playoff is the culmination of a prolonged dispute over the composition of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League.
Mombasa United finished third in the 2025/26 National Super League with 76 points, recording 24 wins, four draws and 10 defeats in 38 matches.
Kariobangi Sharks, meanwhile, finished 16th in the top flight, putting their Premier League status at stake.
The dispute centred on differing promotion and relegation provisions. The 2025 regulations provided for the bottom three Premier League clubs to be relegated automatically, while the earlier framework allowed the 16th-placed top-flight side to contest a playoff against the third-placed NSL team.
After mediation involving the Football Kenya Federation, the two clubs eventually agreed to settle the matter on the pitch through the two-legged playoff.
Mombasa United carry momentum to Nairobi
The first-leg victory gives Mombasa United a significant psychological and aggregate advantage, but Kariobangi Sharks remain alive in the contest after Wayne's late goal reduced the deficit to 2-1.
The return match in Nairobi will therefore determine whether Mombasa United complete their push for Premier League status or Sharks preserve their place in Kenya's top flight.
For Mombasa United, the objective is clear: protect the narrow advantage and secure their place in the 2026/27 FKF Premier League. For Sharks, the task is to overturn the deficit on home soil.
