Mido questions Egypt FA decision to allow Salah and Abdelmonem to leave camp

Former Egypt international Ahmed Hossam Mido has questioned the Egyptian Football Association's decision to allow Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Abdelmonem to leave the national team camp during the current international window.

Mido's criticism comes amid growing debate around the Egypt squad following the Pharaohs' opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying results and the decisions surrounding the release of some of the country's leading players.

Mido questions treatment of Abdelmonem

Mido specifically raised questions about Abdelmonem's situation after the Nice defender was allowed to leave the Egypt camp before the team's trip to South Sudan.

The 27-year-old was included in the squad but did not feature in Egypt's 0-0 draw against Angola. He was subsequently left out of the squad that travelled to South Sudan for the AFCON qualifier.

OGC Nice confirmed that Abdelmonem left the camp by mutual agreement with the Egyptian coaching staff because the South Sudan match was scheduled to be played on an artificial pitch.

The decision was also linked to the defender's previous anterior cruciate ligament surgery and medical concerns about exposing him to artificial turf.

Mido questioned why Abdelmonem's situation had not been handled in the same manner as Salah's, arguing that the Egyptian football authorities should provide greater clarity about the decisions affecting the country's leading players.

Salah's early departure also attracts scrutiny

Salah's departure from the Egypt camp had already generated considerable discussion.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan later explained that the Liverpool forward's absence from the South Sudan fixture had been arranged in advance because of concerns about the artificial playing surface and the potential effect on the player's health.

Reuters reported that Hassan described Salah as an important member of the national team and rejected suggestions that there was a serious dispute between the player and the coach.

The situation nevertheless fuelled debate in Egypt over whether established international players should be released from camp during an important qualifying period.

Egypt begin AFCON qualifying campaign

Egypt opened their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign with a goalless draw against Angola before responding with a 5-0 victory over South Sudan.

The results left the Pharaohs top of Group B with four points, ahead of Malawi on three, while Angola had one point and South Sudan none at the time of the latest reporting.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Debate continues around Egypt's national team

Mido's comments add to an increasingly public debate over the management of Egypt's senior national team.

The former striker's criticism centres on the consistency and transparency of decisions involving senior players, particularly when medical considerations, club interests and national-team commitments overlap.

For Abdelmonem, however, the available official explanation is clear: Nice and the Egypt coaching staff mutually agreed that leaving camp was the best way to protect his fitness because of the artificial pitch in South Sudan.

Egypt are now preparing for a friendly against South Africa in Cairo, with attention already turning towards maintaining their position at the top of their AFCON qualifying group.
