Miami, United States — Inter Miami were forced to settle for a 2–2 draw against FC Cincinnati after surrendering their lead in a dramatic second half, with substitute Riquelme Fillipi scoring a late equaliser to rescue a point in Wednesday’s Major League Soccer encounter.
Luis Suárez had given Miami the advantage shortly after the hour mark, but Cincinnati responded with goals from Kenji Mboma Dem and Samuel Gidi to turn the match around.
With defeat looming, Fillipi struck in the 90th minute to ensure the points were shared at Nu Stadium.
The result was a setback for Miami’s hopes of securing second place in the Eastern Conference, particularly after the New England Revolution defeated the New York Red Bulls 3–2 on the same night.
Suárez Opens the Scoring with a Superb Finish
After a largely quiet first half, Miami finally broke the deadlock in the 61st minute through Suárez.
Rodrigo De Paul initiated the move before Casemiro delivered the ball to the Uruguayan striker inside the penalty area. Suárez took a touch, turned and curled a superb effort into the far top corner, with the ball striking the underside of the crossbar on its way in.
The goal was Suárez’s 16th in the MLS regular season and appeared to put Miami on course for an important home victory.
However, Cincinnati responded strongly during the closing stages.
Cincinnati Turn the Match Around
Cincinnati drew level in the 80th minute when Kenji Mboma Dem produced an impressive individual effort.
The forward collected the ball on the right, took on several defenders and cut inside before curling a shot into the far corner beyond Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
The visitors then completed their comeback six minutes later.
Samuel Gidi received the ball near the edge of the penalty area and struck a precise left-footed effort into the bottom corner to put Cincinnati 2–1 ahead.
With time running out, Miami were suddenly facing another disappointing result after their recent defeat to the New York Red Bulls.
Fillipi Rescues a Point for Miami
Miami’s response came through Brazilian substitute Fillipi, who had entered the game in the 83rd minute.
In the 90th minute, De Paul found the young attacker in space on the left. Fillipi cut inside and curled a shot through a crowded defensive line into the far side of the net.
The goal was Fillipi’s first for Inter Miami and restored parity at 2–2.
Both teams had opportunities to claim a winner late in the contest. Suárez fired an effort towards the goalkeeper, while Cincinnati’s Evander saw a close-range shot blocked by a Miami defender.
Neither side could find another goal, leaving the teams to share the points.
Messi Kept Quiet as Miami Lose Ground
Miami captain Lionel Messi was unable to make his usual attacking impact, with Cincinnati closely marking the Argentine and limiting his opportunities to shoot.
Despite controlling 58.6 per cent of possession and registering 14 shots, Miami could not turn their statistical advantage into victory.
The draw left Inter Miami on 56 points, two behind New England, with two regular-season matches remaining. Miami will need a strong finish if they are to move into second place in the Eastern Conference.
Cincinnati, meanwhile, earned a valuable point in their push for a place in the automatic play-off positions. They remain eighth in the conference, level on points with Orlando City but behind on the relevant tiebreaker.
Inter Miami Prepare for New England Test
Miami’s next assignment is an away fixture against the New England Revolution on Sunday, 1 November.
The match could prove crucial to their hopes of improving their position before the play-offs, as they face one of the teams immediately above them in the standings.
For Cincinnati, the draw offers encouragement after a spirited comeback, although they will need to maintain their form in their remaining fixtures to strengthen their play-off prospects.
