Lens defeat Lyon 2-1 despite late scare to end visitors’ unbeaten run

Lens, France — RC Lens claimed a valuable 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on Friday night, with goals from Florian Sotoca and Matthieu Udol helping the hosts secure their second Ligue 1 win of the 2026/27 season.

The Matchday Six encounter at Stade Bollaert-Delelis saw Lens dominate for long periods before a late red card and Khalis Merah’s goal made for a tense finish. However, the hosts held on to collect all three points and inflict Lyon’s first league defeat of the campaign.

Sotoca puts Lens ahead before half-time

Lens started brightly in front of their home supporters, applying pressure and creating several promising opportunities against Lyon’s defence.

Their persistence paid off in the 36th minute when Florian Sotoca broke the deadlock to give the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead.

Lyon struggled to impose themselves consistently during the first half, with Lens maintaining their intensity and limiting the visitors’ attacking threat.

Goalkeeper Dominik Greif made important saves to prevent the deficit from increasing before the interval.

Udol doubles Lens’ advantage

Lens continued to threaten after the restart, with Ruben Aguilar and Florian Thauvin involved in dangerous attacking moves.

The hosts eventually extended their lead in the 76th minute. Matthieu Udol met a precise free-kick from Thauvin with a diving header, beating Greif to make it 2-0.

The goal appeared to put Lens firmly in control, with Lyon struggling to find a way through their opponents’ organised defence.

Red card gives Lyon hope

The closing stages became more complicated for Lens when Udol was sent off in the 84th minute following a serious challenge on Lyon substitute Khalis Merah.

Lyon immediately capitalised on their numerical advantage. Merah pulled a goal back in the 85th minute, finishing after a defensive clearance fell into his path inside the penalty area.

The goal set up a tense finale as the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser produced an important late save to deny Lyon and preserve his side’s advantage.

Lens climb as Lyon suffer first defeat

The 2-1 victory marked an important response for Lens after a difficult opening to the league campaign. It was also the first win for coach Yannick Cahuzac since taking charge.

Lens moved up to seventh place with seven points, while Lyon remained second on 11 points despite losing their unbeaten league record.

For Lens, the result provides renewed confidence as they seek greater consistency. Lyon, meanwhile, will look to recover quickly after missing the opportunity to strengthen their position near the top of the table.
