Kano Pillars held by Sporting Lagos as both sides extend run of draws

Kano Pillars and Sporting Lagos played out a 1-1 draw in their EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 7 encounter at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Saturday.

The result extended Kano Pillars’ run without a victory to three matches, while Sporting Lagos also registered their third consecutive league draw.

Sporting Lagos strike before half-time

Kano Pillars started strongly and created several opportunities, but Sporting Lagos goalkeeper Clinton Lawani produced an impressive display to keep the hosts at bay.

Lawani denied efforts from Rabiu Ali, Ahmed Musa and Yahaya Ibrahim, including a double save as Pillars continued to apply pressure.

Sporting Lagos eventually broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time.

Valentine Ugwu reacted quickest to a rebound and rolled the ball into an empty net after Kano Pillars failed to deal with an attacking move, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Abdullahi Musa restores parity

Kano Pillars responded immediately after the interval.

Three minutes into the second half, Abdullahi Musa rose to head home from Rabiu Ali’s corner and bring the hosts level at 1-1.

The equaliser gave Pillars renewed momentum as they pushed for a second goal.

However, Lawani remained composed in the Sporting Lagos goal and produced another important save to deny Rabiu Ali's free-kick before the hour mark.

Pillars unable to find winner

Daniel Ogunmodede made several changes as Kano Pillars searched for the winning goal, introducing Nasiru Salihu, Nazifi Yahaya, Ibrahim Sani Haliru, Ubong Friday and Rivio Ayemwenre.

Sporting Lagos defended resolutely during the closing stages to secure a valuable point away from home.

The draw means Pillars remain unbeaten after seven matches, although they have now drawn their last three games. Sporting Lagos have also drawn their last three league matches.

What comes next

Kano Pillars are scheduled to travel to Ibadan to face Shooting Stars in a rearranged fixture.

Sporting Lagos will return home to face Bendel Insurance in Matchday 8.
