India women suffer 4-0 defeat to Russia in historic Kolkata friendly

Kolkata, India: India’s women’s national football team suffered a 4-0 defeat to Russia in their first-ever international appearance in Kolkata, as the visitors capitalised on a strong second-half performance in Thursday’s FIFA international friendly.

The Blue Tigresses held their own for much of the first half at the rain-soaked Kishore Bharati Krirangan on 8 October 2026. However, Russia’s quality eventually told, with Iana Sheina opening the scoring before substitute Kira Petukhova netted twice and Iana Svistunova completed the victory.

Russia break the deadlock before half-time

India, coached by Crispin Chettri, showed resilience during the opening stages against a Russian side ranked considerably higher in the FIFA women’s world rankings.

The hosts’ resistance was broken shortly before the interval when Iana Sheina found the net in the 40th minute, giving Russia a valuable lead heading into half-time.

India struggled to contain the visitors’ attacking pressure after the restart, with Russia increasing their advantage through a decisive spell in the second half.

Petukhova scores twice as Russia pull away

Russia’s second goal arrived in the 60th minute through Kira Petukhova, who struck again five minutes later to put the visitors firmly in control at 3-0.

Iana Svistunova added the fourth goal in the 81st minute, completing a convincing victory for the Russian team.

Goals

  • Russia: Iana Sheina 40'

  • Russia: Kira Petukhova 60', 65'

  • Russia: Iana Svistunova 81'

Chettri gives young players an opportunity

The match provided India with an opportunity to assess emerging talent as the team builds towards the 2027 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Chettri handed international debuts to six players: Babysana Devi Thingbaijam, Malati Munda, Cindy Colney, Shubhangi Singh, Dhurga Perumal and Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam.

Goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem also made her first start for the senior national team, having previously earned two caps.

India’s preparations for the friendlies had been affected by player unavailability linked to club commitments. The coaching staff therefore used the occasion to expose younger players to stronger international opposition.

Second meeting scheduled for 11 October

The defeat was India’s first international outing since winning their sixth SAFF Women’s Championship title in June 2026.

The result also continued Russia’s winning record against India. Russia had won their two previous meetings, including an 8-0 victory in 2021 and a 2-0 success in February 2025.

The teams will meet again at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Sunday, 11 October, giving India another opportunity to respond and gain further experience against European opposition.
