Everton forward Martin Sherif fined £5,000 by FA over 61 football bets

Liverpool, England — Everton forward Martin Sherif has been fined £5,000 by the Football Association (FA) after admitting responsibility for 61 bets being placed on football matches over a 15-month period.

The 20-year-old was sanctioned after breaching FA Rule E1.2, which prohibits football participants from causing, permitting or enabling bets to be placed on football matches.

According to the FA, the bets were placed between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026.

Sherif says he did not personally place the bets

Although Sherif accepted responsibility for the breaches, he maintained that he did not personally place any of the wagers.

An independent regulatory commission imposed the £5,000 fine after considering several mitigating factors, including his early admission following the charges brought against him in August, his cooperation with the investigation and what the commission described as his genuine remorse.

The sanction was announced by the FA on Thursday, 8 October 2026.

Everton forward yet to make senior debut

Sherif joined Everton’s academy in 2019 and has progressed through the club’s development system.

The Netherlands youth international is yet to make a senior appearance for Everton’s first team. He spent the previous season on loan at League One clubs Rotherham United and Port Vale as he continued his development in senior football.

The fine adds a disciplinary matter to the young forward’s career as he seeks to establish himself in professional football.

What the FA’s betting rules say

The FA’s betting regulations apply to players and other participants in English football. Under the rules, those covered by the worldwide betting ban are prohibited from betting, directly or indirectly, on football matches and competitions.

The regulations are intended to protect the integrity of the sport and prevent conduct that could undermine confidence in football.

In Sherif’s case, the charge concerned enabling bets to be placed, rather than a finding that he had personally placed the wagers himself.

The FA confirmed that an independent regulatory commission imposed the financial penalty. Its published announcement also made the written reasons for the decision available.
