Lions prepare for Jukskei derby against Bulls as Springboks return

Pretoria, South Africa — The 10bet Lions are preparing for a fiercely contested Jukskei derby against the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, 10 October, with head coach Ivan van Rooyen warning that accuracy, physicality and set-piece dominance will be crucial.

The Lions head into the United Rugby Championship (URC) Round Three encounter unbeaten after winning their opening two matches. They defeated the Ospreys 35–19 before claiming a 26–20 victory over Leinster, building early momentum ahead of their trip to Pretoria.

Van Rooyen warns of a tough Bulls challenge

Despite their encouraging start, Van Rooyen expects a significant test against a Bulls side eager to respond after losing 26–22 away to Munster.

“Accuracy is going to be massive going into the Bulls fixture,” the Lions coach said.

He also highlighted the importance of the set piece and the physical demands traditionally associated with South African derbies, noting that the Bulls have shown an increasing willingness to play an expansive attacking game.

The Lions will need to maintain their discipline and execution against opponents who possess considerable international experience, particularly among their forwards.

Springboks return to strengthen the Lions

The Lions have received a significant boost with the return of Springboks Quan Horn and Morne van den Berg.

Horn returns at fullback, while Van den Berg resumes his role at scrum-half. Their inclusion strengthens the Lions' defensive organisation and attacking options as they prepare for one of their toughest fixtures of the early season.

Henco van Wyk also returns after missing the previous match as a precaution following a head injury. He partners Ethan Adams in midfield, while Richard Kriel shifts to the wing.

Captain Francke Horne continues to lead the side, with Siba Qoma and JC Pretorius completing the loose trio. Boan Venter, PJ Botha and Sebastian Lombard make up the starting front row.

Bulls bring back international firepower

The Bulls are also reinforcing their line-up for the derby, recalling Springboks Canan Moodie, Cameron Hanekom, Johan Grobbelaar and Gerhard Steenekamp to the starting XV.

Veteran fullback Willie le Roux returns to provide experience at the back, while Handré Pollard is among the replacements, giving the Bulls additional options for the closing stages.

The selection underlines the hosts' determination to respond after their defeat to Munster and prevent the Lions from extending their unbeaten run.

Set pieces could decide the derby

The battle between the forward packs is expected to be one of the defining features of the contest. Lions assistant coach and scrum coach Julian Redelinghuys has emphasised the intensity that comes with facing another South African side, particularly in the scrum and other set-piece situations.

The Lions will also look to draw on lessons from their recent performances and maintain their composure under pressure. Against a Bulls team featuring several Springboks, any weakness in the set piece or loss of discipline could prove costly.

Lions seek another Loftus victory

The Lions will take confidence from their 43–33 victory over the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld last season, although repeating that result will require another strong performance against a reshaped home side.

The Jukskei derby kicks off at 13:30 South African time on Saturday, 10 October, at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The result could have an early impact on the two teams' URC campaigns, with the Lions looking to preserve their perfect start and the Bulls aiming to return to winning ways.
