Reports in Ghana and Senegal indicate that Thiaw is among the coaches being assessed by Ghanaian football authorities, although no agreement or appointment has been officially announced.
Ghana begins search for new coach
The Black Stars position became vacant after Queiroz and the Ghana Football Association parted ways following a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana opened the qualifiers with a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 home loss to The Gambia. Reuters reported that Queiroz managed just one win in seven matches during his latest spell in charge.
The GFA and Ghana's Ministry of Sports and Recreation have subsequently established a five-member search committee to identify, assess and recommend the next head coach.
Five-member committee given October 9 deadline
The committee is chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe and includes former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe, legal practitioner and football administrator Agbesi Dzakpasu, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah.
The committee has been tasked with conducting the recruitment process and submitting its recommendation to the GFA.
According to the Ghana Football Association, the report is expected by October 9, 2026.
Thiaw's record with Senegal
Thiaw's emergence as a candidate comes after a significant spell in charge of Senegal.
The 45-year-old guided the Teranga Lions to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final and qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was subsequently removed from his position following Senegal's World Cup campaign.
The Senegalese Football Federation announced in July that it had begun the process of ending Thiaw's tenure after evaluating the team's World Cup results and future prospects.
Senegal subsequently appointed former France international Patrick Vieira as Thiaw's successor.
No decision yet on Black Stars coach
While reports have linked Thiaw with the Ghana job, the GFA has not confirmed him as the preferred candidate.
The search committee is expected to consider several options before submitting its recommendation, meaning Thiaw's potential appointment remains subject to the ongoing recruitment process.
Ghana will now look to appoint a coach capable of rebuilding confidence in the Black Stars and improving their position in the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
