The Blues produced a disciplined defensive display at the Groupama Stadium, with goalkeeper Hannah Hampton making crucial saves to deny the French side and preserve a clean sheet.
The result also marked Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor’s return to Lyon, where she previously enjoyed success as both a player and manager.
Hampton keeps Chelsea in the contest
Lyon created several opportunities but found Hampton difficult to beat. The England goalkeeper made an important stop to deny Salma Paralluelo, while Chelsea’s defence worked hard to contain the hosts’ attacking threat.
Ada Hegerberg came close to breaking the deadlock late in the match, but Hampton produced an excellent save to keep out her effort.
Chelsea also had opportunities to snatch victory. Substitute Lauren James was presented with a promising chance after Alyssa Thompson’s pull-back, but her effort was saved by Lyon goalkeeper Mala Grohs.
VAR denies Chelsea late penalty
The closing stages produced a controversial moment when James appeared to be brought down inside the penalty area by Damaris Egurrola.
Referee Marta Huerta de Aza initially awarded Chelsea a penalty, but after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, she overturned her decision.
Neither side could find a breakthrough, and the contest ended goalless after a hard-fought encounter.

The draw gives Chelsea another point in the Champions League league phase following their opening victory over Austria Wien. The Blues will now turn their attention to their next European fixture as they continue their campaign.
