Capitals defeat Penguins 5-3 in Alex Ovechkin’s final home opener

Washington, United States — The Washington Capitals marked Alex Ovechkin’s final NHL home opener with a 5-3 victory over their long-standing rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, at Capital One Arena on Wednesday.

The victory gave Washington a 2-1-0 start to the 2026-27 season, while the Penguins slipped to 2-2-0. The game also marked the 101st overall meeting between Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, two of the defining players of the NHL era.

Capitals make fast start

Washington needed only 23 seconds to open the scoring, with Anthony Beauvillier beating Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs on a breakaway.

Pittsburgh responded through Bryan Rust, who was making his season debut after missing the opening three games with an upper-body injury.

The Capitals regained the lead when Tom Wilson finished from the slot at 11:51 of the opening period, giving Washington a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes.

Wilson leads Capitals charge

Washington extended its advantage in the second period when Pierre-Luc Dubois scored at 4:42 following a turnover behind the Penguins' net.

Wilson was again involved, setting up Dubois before later contributing to another Capitals goal.

Alex Tuch then made it 4-1 at 13:14 after intercepting a pass and finishing a two-on-zero rush with Wilson.

The Penguins, however, refused to go quietly.

Tommy Novak reduced the deficit to 4-2 before Nick Robertson pulled Pittsburgh within one with 1:59 remaining in the second period.

That set up a tense final period with Washington protecting a 4-3 lead.

Leonard seals Ovechkin’s memorable night

The Capitals restored their two-goal cushion early in the third period.

Ryan Leonard scored on the power play at 3:55, beating Silovs from the top of the left face-off circle to make it 5-3.

Washington then held Pittsburgh scoreless for the remainder of the contest to secure the victory.

Logan Thompson made 27 saves for the Capitals, while Silovs stopped 22 shots for Pittsburgh.

Ovechkin and Crosby share another historic chapter

Although neither Ovechkin nor Crosby registered a point, their latest meeting carried considerable significance.

Ovechkin had announced earlier in the week that the 2026-27 campaign will be his final NHL season, bringing an end to a 22-season career with the Capitals.

The Russian forward is the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, while his rivalry with Crosby has become one of the defining individual rivalries in league history.

The Capitals had announced the home opener specifically against Pittsburgh, creating another chapter in the long-running Ovechkin-Crosby rivalry.

For Washington, the night ultimately belonged to the team as much as its legendary captain. Wilson's three-point performance, four different goal scorers and a composed finish ensured Ovechkin's final home opener began with a memorable Capitals victory.
