CAF denies reports of alternative hosts for AFCON 2027

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly denied claims that it is considering alternative hosts for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting that the tournament remains scheduled to take place in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda under the PAMOJA project.

A senior CAF official told football journalist Micky Jnr that the governing body had not contacted Morocco, Algeria or South Africa about potentially hosting the tournament.

According to the official, “nothing of this sort has been discussed.”

The CAF figure also reiterated that CAF President Patrice Motsepe's position remains that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will go ahead in East Africa, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda serving as co-hosts.

CAF's published plans support that position. The governing body has repeatedly identified the three countries as the hosts and has continued to oversee preparations for the tournament, which is scheduled to run from 19 June to 17 July 2027.

In September, Motsepe said he remained confident that Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda would successfully host the tournament despite challenges surrounding preparations. He acknowledged that work remained to be done but said CAF was committed to helping the three countries meet the required deadlines.

CAF also conducted an eight-day inspection visit to facilities across the three host countries in August and September, assessing stadiums, training grounds, hotels, airports and other tournament infrastructure.

The governing body has already begun preparations for the qualifying campaign, officially referring to the competition as TotalEnergies CAF AFCON PAMOJA 2027. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are automatically qualified as co-hosts, while the qualifying groups are being used to determine the remaining teams for the finals.

The senior CAF official reportedly also questioned whether the organisation would issue another public statement denying similar reports, given the frequency of such claims.

For now, CAF's publicly documented position remains that AFCON 2027 will be staged in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda under the PAMOJA project.
