FREIBURG, Germany — Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga table after defeating Freiburg 3–1 away from home on Sunday, with Michael Olise scoring a stoppage-time goal to secure the victory after the hosts threatened a late comeback.
Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry gave Bayern a commanding first-half lead, but Tom Bischof’s own goal brought Freiburg back into the contest late in the second half. Olise then punished the hosts’ push for an equaliser to settle the match.
The result maintained Bayern’s unbeaten start to the league campaign, leaving them ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference with 17 points from seven matches. Freiburg remained third with 13 points.
Upamecano and Gnabry Put Bayern in Control
Bayern took the lead in the 16th minute through an outstanding individual effort from Upamecano.
The French defender blocked an attempted Freiburg attack before driving forward and joining a rapid counterattack. After linking up with Konrad Laimer and Olise, he continued his run into the opposition penalty area and finished calmly past goalkeeper Mio Backhaus.
Bayern continued to control possession and create the more dangerous opportunities. Their pressure paid off shortly before half-time when Gnabry doubled the advantage.
In the 42nd minute, the German international combined with Nathaniel Brown before making a powerful run into the penalty area and finishing from a tight angle. The goal was his 100th in the Bundesliga, giving Bayern a comfortable 2–0 advantage at the break.
Freiburg Find Hope Through Bischof’s Own Goal
Bayern remained in control after the interval, limiting Freiburg’s attacking opportunities while searching for a third goal.
Harry Kane came close with a header, while substitute Ismael Saibari also tested Backhaus as the visitors looked to put the match beyond reach.
However, Freiburg found a lifeline in the 80th minute when Bischof inadvertently turned Rihito Yamamoto’s pass into his own net.
The goal transformed the closing stages, with Freiburg pressing aggressively in search of an equaliser. Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig was called upon to make important interventions as the home side increased the pressure.
Olise Seals the Win in Stoppage Time
Just when Freiburg appeared capable of forcing a dramatic finish, Olise delivered the decisive moment.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time, the French winger capitalised on a Freiburg mistake in possession and spotted Backhaus away from his goal. He calmly sent the ball into the unguarded net to make it 3–1 and confirm Bayern’s victory.
The late goal ensured that Bayern left Freiburg with all three points after a performance that combined attacking quality, defensive resilience and composure under pressure.
Bayern Overcome Absences Ahead of Dortmund Showdown
Bayern had to cope with several absences, including goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Min-jae Kim, Luis Díaz and Aleksandar Pavlović. Head coach Vincent Kompany was also unavailable, leaving assistant coach Aaron Danks to take charge from the touchline.
Despite those challenges, Bayern produced an impressive away performance and strengthened their position in the title race.
Attention now turns to next weekend’s meeting with Borussia Dortmund, which could have significant implications for the Bundesliga standings.
For Freiburg, the late defeat was a setback after their spirited attempt to recover from a two-goal deficit.
